Our History

A Commitment to the Art & Science of Online Video

“On some level, every company now is a media company,” according to Gary Kahn, Zeitbyte’s President and Co-Founder. “Every company has a story to tell, and if you’re not telling it, your customers aren’t really understanding who you are.”

That said, we should probably give you a little background about ourselves as well…

Ryan Johnston grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia, volunteering in television at age 13 and directing his first broadcast television show at 17. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 2001, he worked as an assistant producer at Sight Effects in New York City getting into the live event production world. One year later he founded Destination Video, a boutique production company that specialized in video production, video archiving and encoding and equipment rentals. Destination Video worked with clients such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast, MaxMara, Walmart, Facebook, The James Beard Awards, Time Warner, GLADD Awards, Ladies Home Journal, Penn State University.

By the mid-2000s, Internet video was on the verge of exploding, and Gary Kahn and Kevin Brail, Co-Founders of Zeitbyte, saw clear opportunities for bridging a gap between technology and filmmaking. They founded Zeitbyte in 2006 quickly becoming a leading provider of live streaming and video hosting services in the United States; offering a live streaming production service beyond any of it’s competitors. Zeitbyte boasted clients that included: Con Edison, Kenneth Cole, Universal Music Group, Ogilvy PR, UBS, Neiman Marcus, and Michael Kors.

In early 2011 Destination Video was acquired by Zeitbyte and Ryan Johnston became it’s Director of Video Production. Together, the company grew to include international projects from music concert production, audiovisual management to the production of many highly sophisticated web services for luxury brands.

By early 2014 Zeitbyte’s business was re-incorporated as Video Destination with Ryan Johnston as President. Today, Zeitbyte’s brand and business have evolved with Gary Kahn & Kevin Brail launching… (?)

Since then, Video Destination has grown the business from startup to a mature powerhouse of production services. Clients include UNICEF, Bloomingdales, The Associated Press, Pratt Institute, Fordham University, Jazz Foundation of America, ADWeek, BeetTV, Jason Wu, AIGA, Dailymotion, Hogan Lovells, , eMarketer, Complex Media, Red Bull, MSL Media Group, MaxMara, Dannon, Church Pension Fund, UNC Medical School, and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
